Angel’s Share: The Comeback NYC’s Been Waiting For

The legendary bar is back and better than ever

Angel’s Share’s famous mural is featured at the bar

About: Angel’s Share has long been considered a pioneer of the NYC cocktail scene, initially opened in 1993 by Tony Yoshida. After suddenly shuttering in 2022, it has finally found a new home at 45 Grove Street in the West Village. With Tony’s daughter, Erina, at the helm, the new Angel’s Share promises to capture the charm of the beloved establishment with a new twist.

Some old favorites have stayed on the menu, like the Cheek to Cheek

The vibe: Like her father, Erina has masterfully cultivated a unique speakeasy atmosphere. The new Angel’s Share is much larger, but is similarly hidden from the street – the entrance has no markings, is at the ground floor of an unassuming building and visibility from the street is concealed through frosted windows. Upon entry, there is a separate waiting room that builds anticipation and sets the tone for the evening. The bar captures the ambiance of the original location, but with more luxurious finishes. The famous mural is back, hanging above a much larger bar. Despite its expanded size, Angel’s Share maintains its cozy speakeasy vibe through romantic alcove seating, antique lamps, black-and-white photos and lush bouquets of flowers. Entering Angel’s Share, one loses sense of time, cocooned in the delicate candle light.

The menu is long and creative - try the Fiesta

The menu: The menu is extensive and mostly new, with some old favorites making a reappearance, such as the Cheek to Cheek. Similar to the original bar, drinks run light and the alcohol isn’t discernible on some drinks. Overall, however, cocktails are creative and well-executed. The Fiesta was one of the better drinks I’ve had this year, featuring rye, mitarashi syrup, seaweed and soy sauce powder.

Angel’s Share currently doesn’t have a food menu, but small bites are in development and may feature sashimi and karaage chicken.

How to do it right: Angel’s Share has maintained its old etiquette policies, forbidding reservations and parties larger than four people. Try to come by early and snag a seat at the bar to see the mural. The intimate interior makes Angel’s Share a perfect spot for dates or catching up with friends. Anyone can enjoy Angel’s Share, as there are separate non-alcoholic options.
